Case Study: Saudi Arabia Conceptual Project

In this article, we share our experience of creating a large-scale conceptual project in partnership with the architectural bureau VKA. We take you behind the scenes of integrating futuristic architecture into the complex terrain of Saudi Arabia and demonstrate how professional CGI development transforms bold engineering ideas into a compelling visual narrative.

INTRODUCTION

Architecture evolves under the influence of many factors — technological innovation, social change, economic conditions, and new ideas. Within this process, conceptual projects occupy a special place. They create space for experimentation, testing hypotheses, and rethinking established approaches. More than anything, they are exercises in challenge and intellectual exploration.

It was within this atmosphere of creative research that the collaboration between the Ukrainian architectural bureau VKA and our visualization studio, CGIKite, took shape. Together, we faced an ambitious task: to develop a distinctive, context-driven environment where VKA’s architectural vision could come to life, gaining volume, color, and cinematic atmosphere through the tools of professional 3D visualization.

To bring these ideas to life, we deliberately chose one of the most dynamic and innovative regions in the world — Saudi Arabia. The location is defined by its monumental, almost extraterrestrial geography. The contrast between endless desert landscapes, rugged mountain formations, and the deep sea creates a unique visual context. Today, Saudi Arabia has become a global testing ground for architectural and urban experiments, where seemingly impossible ideas are transformed into reality. It is precisely this landscape that can organically accommodate, amplify, and reveal the scale of our shared concept.

CONTEXT & CONCEPT

The design process began with an in-depth analysis of the site. We selected a unique location within a wadi — a dried riverbed with steep terraced slopes — situated near a modern ski resort. The central metaphor behind the concept is one of regeneration: the project symbolically returns water to this arid yet remarkably beautiful landscape. From this idea emerged the project's broader spatial strategy. Rather than competing with nature, the architecture extends its logic.

We created a synergistic ecosystem in which an artificial lake is integrated into the natural topography, stretching across approximately one and a half to two kilometers. This large-scale planning approach allowed us to develop a sequence of interconnected spatial scenarios, where every element interacts with its surroundings. The proximity of the ski resort and cable lift introduces a unique logistics of experience. Within a single day, visitors can ski in snow-covered mountains, descend to the water for recreational activities, and immerse themselves in a futuristic underwater environment designed for business events and cultural gatherings.

HOTEL-TOWER

The visual and compositional centerpiece of the entire development is a multifunctional hotel tower. Its architectural language is strongly rooted in the idea of environmental mimicry. The building appears as a natural rock formation emerging directly from the canyon, yet infused with advanced technological tectonics.

Massive stone slabs alternate with floor-to-ceiling panoramic glazing, opening spectacular 360-degree views of the canyon to visitors. VKA carefully developed the geometry and modular grid of the structure, while the CGIKite team translated these ideas into materiality, creating realistic reflections of the surrounding cliffs across the glass façades. This connection between architecture and landscape continues through the tower’s biophilic design elements. Integrated vegetation and a monumental artificial waterfall become key components of the experience.

The waterfall originates from the upper levels of the tower, cuts through its structure, and cascades dynamically into the artificial lake below. For us, as CGI specialists, this feature became an opportunity to showcase a high level of technical expertise. We carefully developed water simulations, spray effects, and light interactions within the flowing water to achieve maximum visual impact and photorealism in every frame.

ARTIFICIAL LAKE

At the foot of the tower lies the artificial lake — the largest and most technically complex element of the concept. Here, water becomes an active spatial medium rather than a simple landscape feature.

The lake operates on two completely different levels.

The upper level is dedicated to sport and movement. Thanks to the region’s natural conditions and the strong winds that regularly pass through the canyon, the area provides ideal conditions for kitesurfing and other water-based activities. The space remains open and flexible, allowing visitors to create their own leisure scenarios.

Beneath this active surface lies the project's most unexpected destination: a hidden underwater city. Although physically separated from the lake above, the lower level creates a unique sense of total immersion while remaining entirely dry. It consists of an extensive network of modular halls and futuristic spaces designed for conferences, exhibitions, and large-scale events.

Looking upward, visitors can see the mass of water overhead through ultra-strong transparent structures. Sunlight refracts through the lake, while the silhouettes of kitesurfers glide across the surface above. The result is a large-scale alternative to the traditional aquarium concept — a completely new spatial experience for both business and recreation.

THE LIFE OF THE PROJECT: FROM SUNRISE TO NEON NIGHT

Together with VKA, we aimed to demonstrate the full daily lifecycle of the development. We refined the architectural models, enriched them with depth, materiality, and detailed stone and metal textures, then used lighting as a primary storytelling tool. The project reveals itself differently throughout the day: from the crisp architectural clarity of bright daylight to the soft pastel atmosphere of sunset, when the sky paints the cliffs in shades of pink and terracotta. The visual narrative reaches its climax after dark.

As night falls, the entire complex undergoes a dramatic transformation through integrated neon illumination. Vibrant lighting accentuates the biomorphic forms of the architecture, turning the development into a futuristic nightlife destination in the middle of the desert. To achieve this effect, we carefully balanced artificial neon lighting against a deep, star-filled night sky, creating a cinematic vision of a future celebration visible from miles away.

THE POWER OF CONCEPTUAL THINKING

Working on large-scale conceptual projects through collaboration is a strategically important tool for the advancement of both the architectural and CGI industries. Projects like this allow architects to expand the boundaries of what is possible, test unconventional spatial scenarios, and move beyond familiar design frameworks.

For our visualization studio, CGIKite, this collaboration also became an opportunity to demonstrate the full range of technical and artistic capabilities — from complex environmental simulations to the communication of subtle emotional experiences through visual storytelling.

Ultimately, conceptual projects may not directly shape the future on their own, but they play a vital role in expanding the conversation around what architecture can become. They challenge assumptions, inspire new directions, and give form to ideas that might otherwise remain purely theoretical.
